HTC has finally entered the wearable segment with its first
fitness tracker, Grip. There were speculations that HTC would release an
Android Wear smartwatch instead we get a GPS enabled fitness tracker. The band
looks similar to Microsoft's Band as it follows the same form factor.
The band
will be launched in partnership with Under Armour, an American company that
manufactures sports clothing and accessories. The company's UA Record system
will help keep a track of fitness endeavours like Running and other
workouts.
The exterior of the band is matte black finish but the
interior, on the contrary, is a bright and florescent cushion that lets the band
have a better "Grip". The band comes with five different sensors
including the GPS that will record route, distance, pace and calories burned.
The company claims that the band can give a back-up of 2.5 days without the GPS
but just 5 hours with the tracking sensor on. Unlike many of its competitors,
HTC has not included a heart rate sensor, instead it allows external devices that
can be paired via Bluetooth.
HTC CEO Peter Chou said, "Simply put, Grip will train
you as if you have a team of professional experts coaching you the entire
time."
Grip will be compatible with both Android and iOS operating systems,
which can help in mass acceptance of the band. The band come in 3 different
sizes and 2 different colours, deep teal and lime. The company has announced
that the band will be launched at a price of $199 later this spring.
