The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today banned Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.
Rauf was accused of being involved in fixing-related activities by the Mumbai Police during the 2013 IPL . However, that case was unrelated to the one which sent cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela and Ankeet Chavan.
Rauf has so far appeared in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs and 23 T20 internationals. His first appearance as an international umpire was in an ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The BCCI ban means Rauf cannot be associated in any capacity in cricket tournaments organised by the Indian board or its affiliates. Rauf was a "wanted accused" in the chargesheet filed by the Mumbai Police but he left India during the IPL even before the police had the chance to question him in person.
The controversial Pakistani umpire had been withdrawn by the ICC from the 2013 Champions Trophy England for his alleged role in the scandal.
Rauf has had a history of controversies and in 2012 a small-time model named Leena Kapoor had accused him of sexually exploiting her for months before refusing to marry her.
In the 2013 IPL, Rauf had on-field umpiring duty in 13 matches, the last one being in the game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders in Hyderabad on May 19.
