New York-bound Amtrak train derails in Philadelphia, several people hurt

Emergency personnel work the scene of a train wreck on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, in Philadelphia. An Amtrak train headed to New York City derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, mangling the front of it and injuring several people, some of whom climbed out of windows to get away.
Train 188, a Northeast Regional, had left Washington, D.C., earlier on Tuesday. The front of the train was going into a turn when it shook.
An Associated Press manager, Paul Cheung, was on the train and said he was watching Netflix when "the train started to decelerate, like someone had slammed the brake."
"Then suddenly you could see everything starting to shake," he said. "You could see people's stuff flying over me."
Cheung said another passenger urged him to escape from the back of his car, which he did. He said he saw passengers trying to escape through the windows of cars tipped on their side.
"The front of the train is really mangled," he said. "It's a complete wreck. The whole thing is like a pile of metal."
The cause of the derailment was unknown, but Amtrak said it was investigating. The area where the derailment occurred is known as Frankford Junction and has a big curve.
Police swarming around the crash site, in Port Richmond, a working-class area, told people to get back, away from the train. They pleaded with curious onlookers: "Do NOT go to scene of derailment. Please allow 1st responders room to work."
Roads all around the crash site were blocked off. Waves of firefighters continuing toward the train cars, taking people out.
Several injured people, including one man complaining of neck pain, were rolled away on stretchers. Others wobbled while walking away or were put on city buses. An elderly woman was given oxygen.
Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy was on the train and said he helped people. He tweeted photos of firefighters helping other people in the wreckage.
"Pray for those injured," he said.
Amtrak said the train was carrying 238 passengers and five crew members. It said rail service on the busy Northeast Corridor between New York and Philadelphia was suspended.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was gathering information about the derailment.
Another Amtrak train crashed on Sunday. That train, bound for New Orleans, struck a flatbed truck at a railway crossing in Amite, killing the truck's driver and injuring two people on the train.
In March, at least 55 people were injured when an Amtrak train collided with a tractor-trailer that was stuck on the tracks in North Carolina.
Port Richmond, the site of Tuesday's crash, is one of five neighborhoods in what's known as Philadelphia's River Wards, dense rowhouse neighborhoods located off the Delaware River.

North Korea executes defence chief on treason charges: Reports

North Korean defence chief Hyon Yong Chol. (Photo: Reuters)North Korea has executed its defence chief on treason charges, Seoul's National Intelligence Service was quoted as telling lawmakers, in the latest of a series of high-level purges since Kim Jong Un took power after his father's death in 2011.
Hyon Yong Chol, who heads the isolated country's military, was purged and then executed by firing squad with an antiaircraft gun, watched by hundreds of people, South Korean media reported on Wednesday, citing the NIS's comments to a parliamentary panel.
Hyon, who spoke at a security conference in Moscow in April, was said to have shown disrespect to Kim by dozing off at a military event, media said, citing the agency briefing.
The execution comes after South Korea's spy agency said late last month that Kim ordered the execution of 15 senior officials this year as punishment for challenging his authority.
"North Korean internal politics is very volatile these days," said Michael Madden, an expert on the North Korean leadership and contributor to the 38 North think tank.
"Internally, there does not seem to be any respect for Kim Jong Un within the core and middle levels of the North Korean leadership," he added.
"There is no clear or present danger to Kim Jong Un's leadership or stability in North Korea, but if this continues to happen into next year, then we would seriously have to start looking at a contingency plan for the Korean peninsula".
In 2013, Kim purged and executed his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, once considered the second most powerful man in Pyongyang's leadership circle, for corruption and committing crimes damaging to the economy, along with a group of officials close to him.
Pyongyang's military leadership has been in a state of perpetual reshuffle since Kim took power.
Hyon, a little-known general, was promoted to the rank of vice marshal of the North Korean army in 2012.
The South Korean spy agency told lawmakers that Ma Won Chun, known as North Korea's chief architect of new infrastructure under Kim, was also purged, local media reported.

PM Modi's China visit to focus on better economic ties

PM ModiIndia Today Global Roundtable in Beijing ahead of PM Modi's China visit China is preparing to make "exceptional gestures" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit which starts on Thursday, to underline its desire to build closer economic relations with India, Indian Ambassador to China Ashok Kantha said speaking on the eve of the visit.
Addressing the India Today Global Roundtable in Beijing on Tuesday, Kantha said the visit will highlight deepening economic ties between the neighbours with agreements worth "several billion" dollars on the cards.
"We believe dialogue will develop a new enhanced agenda for cooperation and leaders will also address some outstanding issues," Kantha said. On the trade front, India is pushing China for greater market access for IT, pharma companies and farm products.
On the boundary issue, Kantha said both sides were in favour of an early resolution, but that ensuring peace and tranquility was essential as a prerequisite and foundation to build closer ties.

BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav, addressing the conclave, said "new energy" was already evident in the relationship, underlined in the close rapport enjoyed between Modi and President Xi Jinping last September during the Chinese leader's Gujarat visit.

Keen to reciprocate, Xi will welcome Modi in Xian in his home province of Shaanxi on Thursday - the first time he has hosted a leader outside Beijing - before the Indian Prime Minister travels to Beijing on Friday and Shanghai on Saturday.
Leading Chinese strategic expert Mao Siwei, who earlier served as Consul General in India, said there was an expectation in China that Modi would usher in a new model of relations: "India-China 2.0". "Not letting the border issue getting in the way of overall relations agreed during Rajiv Gandhi's 1988 visit was the first stage model. I sincerely hope Modi will usher in the second stage where the focus will be on Chinese investment and making in India".
At the same time, the relationship will still be challenged by the boundary issue and other sensitive matters such as China's deepening ties with Pakistan, especially through a $46 billion economic corridor through
Mao Siwei candidly admitted the Chinese government was facing "great pressure" on the boundary as highlighted by the dozens of comments posted to Modi's recently opened account on Chinese Twitter Sina Weibo that reminded India about China's claims on Arunachal.
"They say please return south Tibet to China, this is a great pressure the Chinese government is facing".
He also defended China's investments in PoK saying that "a stable Pakistan is in India's interests".
Ram Madhav however said that while India was following "a policy of dehyphenation" vis-à-vis Pakistan and China, "unfortunately China believes in rehyphenation".
At the same time he had "a lot of optimism" with India "taking a totally new course in strengthening the relationship".

Senior Congress leader and former MoS Home RPN Singh said the success of Modi's visit should be measured on concrete outcomes and "meaningful strides", more than just a "perfect picture".
