Keen to bring the gala sporting event that India has never hosted before, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach later this month to discuss the possibility of India bidding for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The IOC president Bach, who will be visiting New Delhi on April 27, feels that a country of 1.2 billion people must play a greater role in international sporting events. "How can we ignore a country of 1.2 billion people," he has been quoted as saying.
Initial reports in various sections of the media had said that Ahmedabad may emerge as the venue for the games, though nothing has been finalised yet.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi was the last major sporting event India had hosted. The event though was marred by a series of controversies and corruption, giving India a bad name internationally.
The last date for submitting the application for nations keen to host the 2024 Olymics is October this year while the IOC will shortlist possible host cities by May, 2016. The host city will officially be named in July, 2017.
