Toss: India won the toss and elected to field first against Zimbabwe.
India notched up the competitive total of 287 runs at the loss of four wickets with eight balls to spare at Auckland. India were given a real scare before they won a riveting contest that kept the jam-packed crowd hooked to the game. It was the experienced duo of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni, who resurrected India's fortunes after they lost the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli.
Raina then went on a hitting spree that included a mighty heave across the line off Tinashe Panyangara for a six and glorious strokes off Hamilton Masakadza. Raina soon completed a masterful hundred and Dhoni for the umpteenth time, rose to the occasion under pressure to compose a fifty, as Zimbabwe sloped towards a gut-wrenching defeat. With this win, Dhoni now has 10 consecutive wins in World Cups.
It has to be said that Zimbabwe's seamers, Tendai Chatara and Panyangara, bowled with good control early on to put them in a position of strength. Both of them generated a bit of swing. The batsmen didn't help their cause by showing poor technique. The story could have been different, but Masakadza dropped a sitter to give Raina a reprieve. Zimbabwe's bowlers struggled to make an impact in the slog overs as well.
Earlier, in Brendan Taylor's last game for Zimbabwe, he plundered the Indian bowling attack by playing orthodox and innovative strokes to score a ton. He especially, took a heavy toll off Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja's bowling by using his feet, playing cheeky sweeps and reverse sweeps. He reached his hundred in style by ramping Mohammed Shami for a six. Once he was dismissed, Zimbabwe lost their way a bit to end up with a total below 300.
With eight centuries to his name, Taylor now holds the record for most number of hundreds by a Zimbabwean cricketer in ODIs. For India, the seamers, Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma were usually on the money and ended up with three wickets apiece. However, both the spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja struggled with the short straight boundaries coming into play.
Zimbabwe showed sparks of brilliance throughout the tournament, but during the crucial moments, their fielding and bowling let them down. On the other hand, having won all their games in the Group stages of the tournament, India will go into their quarterfinal match against Bangladesh at the MCG with full of confidence.
