The monogrammed black suit, worn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he met US President Barack Obama last month, is to be sold at a three-day auction along with 450 other gifts the PM received to raise money to clean the river Ganga. The bidding price for the controversial suit has already touched Rs.1 crore.
The pinstriped wool suit, which carried his full name, Narendra Damodardas Modi, was made by Jade Blue tailors in Ahmedabad, the clothing chain that handles Modi's wardrobe and has reportedly copyrighted the Modi Brand of kurtas. The suit had generated a lot of buzz on the social networks. Fashion designers said the finesse with which Modi's name features in the fabric requires special technique, and that the fabric is most likely hand-woven.
A Gujarati NRI businessman on Wednesday claimed that he gifted the suit to Modi for his son's wedding. "I presented the suit to him (PM Modi) when I attended the recent Vibrant Gujarat summit," Ramesh Kumar Bhikabhai Virani said, adding, "I gave it while extending an invitation to him to attend my son's wedding on January 26."
Modi was widely mocked for narcissism after wearing suit for his Chai Pe Charcha with Obama at New Delhi's Hyderabad House last month. During the acrimonious Delhi Assembly election campaign, 'mufflerman' Kejriwal became the quintessential middle-class hero while 'Pradhansevak' Modi was accused of strutting around in an expensive 'name suit'.
Even Modi's colleagues in the Cabinet had also reportedly advised him to give the suit to an NGO for auction and use the money for the PM's pet Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The money generated from the auction will be donated to a Varanasi NGO, sources said.
