Glass didn't turn out how we hoped: Google
Global search engine giant Google has had a tough fourth quarter.
Google's fourth-quarter financial results have been well below analysts'
predictions, and the company has in a way admitted that its failed
Google Glass project shares some blame for its slumber.
Google's
chief financial officer Patrick Pichette, during the company's earnings
call, admitted that the Glass didn't eventually turn out to be as
desired, therefore Google needed time out to rethink its strategy.
"In
other cases, when teams aren't able to hit hurdles, but we think
there's still a lot of promise, we might ask them to take a pause and
take the time to reset their strategy, as we recently did in the case of
Glass. And in those cases where a project doesn't have the impact we
hoped for, we do take the tough calls. We make the decision to cancel
them, and you've seen us do this time and time again," Pichette was
quoted as saying.
Pichette however gave no indication that the
company was totally abandoning the project, but mentioned that it was
currently re-evaluating its plans with the Glass project.
It
must be noted that Google's explorer program has been cancelled and the
device is no longer available for sale. The project that was born out
of Google X labs has now been shifted to Nest.
